Branch construction decides how your customer’s first evening with the tree goes. It also changes carton size, container loading and whether the tree can be pre-lit.
The short answer
- Hinged: branches are fixed to the pole on hinge rings. They fold up for the carton and drop into place on setup. Fast for the shopper, and the only practical choice for pre-lit trees.
- Hook-on: branches are loose, sorted by tier, and hooked into the pole one at a time. Slower to set up, but the branches pack tightly.
How a hinged tree works
Each pole section carries its branches on hinge rings. In the carton, the branches fold up against the pole. When the shopper slots a section into the one below and lifts it into place, the branches fall open. All that is left is to shape the tips.
Our hinged trees come in two or three pole sections, from 5 to 12 ft (150 to 360 cm).
How a hook-on tree works
The pole comes bare, and the branches come loose in the box, usually color-coded by tier. The shopper sorts them, then hooks each branch into a bracket on the pole, working from the bottom up. On a full 7.5 ft tree that can mean well over a hundred branches.
What changes for your customer
| Feature | Hinged | Hook-on |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Minutes: slot sections, shape tips | Sort and hang every branch |
| Taking down | Lift sections out, branches fold up | Unhook and bag every branch |
| Pre-lit option | Yes, wired along the branches | Rarely practical |
| Storage | A few sections | Pole plus loose branches |
For most retail shoppers, setup time is the feature they remember. Hinged trees also mean fewer missing or misplaced branches, which keeps complaints and returns down.
What changes for you
- Lights. Pre-lit trees need branches that stay attached to the pole, so the wiring can run along them. If your range is pre-lit, it is hinged.
- Packing. Loose hook-on branches can stack tighter than hinged sections, so more trees may fit in a container. Ask for carton size and units per 40HQ for each option before you compare prices.
- Price. Hook-on construction can cost less at entry level. Compare like with like: same height, tip count and PE share.
Which to choose
For mainstream retail, pre-lit trees and anything sold on convenience, choose hinged. That is why hinged trees are most of what we make. Hook-on construction still has a place at the lowest price points, where every cent of packing and material counts.

Questions buyers ask
Are hinged branches strong enough for heavy ornaments?
Branch strength depends on the wire gauge, not the hinge. Tell us how the tree will be decorated, and we set the branch wire to suit.
Can you make a hinged tree in more sections?
We build hinged trees with poles in two or three sections. Taller trees use three, so each section stays a manageable size.
